12 Favorite Problems (October 2023)
... in the spirit of Richard Feynman, my semiannual rendition of 12 Favorite Problems...
What can I do to help my three daughters stay motivated, optimistic and independent?
How can I inspire my daughters to take risks, enjoy risk, and learn how to evaluate risks?
But, given my less-than-stellar risk-taking track-record, what on earth deludes me into thinking I could have any right to be parenting about responsible risk-taking?
And, is parenting by definition paradoxical, or is it just me?
What should I be doing to improve my professional resilience, so that my family and I can continue to enjoy exploring the world together?
What hacks should I adopt to improve my Chinese, which is improving, but way too slowly?
What can I do to contribute to Taipei and Taiwan (in addition to tax), which has given me and my family this incredible opportunity to live here?
How can I help prepare my daughters for climate events that may create havoc, without frightening them or making them feel guilty?
Is there any way to weave my interest in cycling and urban mobility with my experience in distress and credit?
Is there any opportunity I should explore as Taiwan faces a potential energy crisis, as it is forced to burn more coal, closes its nuclear power plants, fails to reach renewable targets, and fails to develop LNG infrastructure?
Will cool heads prevail and will an accident be avoided in the simmering tension across the Taiwan straits?
Am I making a mistake in disregarding (perhaps even disrespecting) loyalties to culture and country in the raising of my daughters?
Loved reading this, especially the questioning around healthy welcoming of risk. Battling with this in a relationship! And, (9) resonates: can you offer to be an advisor to a couple of businesses grappling with this problem?
